Two Directors Named John

Two Directors Named John. 4/30/19

Two directors named John. In #the80s and #the90s, there were movies. One for you. One for me. Two for you, Two for me. Until there were a multitude of stories on film told from very different yet similar perspectives. #JohnHughes spoke to us about suburban white. #JohnSingleton spoke to us about black hood. Both rang true to one experience or another, while staying true to their own unique identities, impacting all youth growing up in an era of 80s yuppie prosperity, and 90s drive bys and death, leaving us wondering, whatever happened to those characters, those fictional people, who we knew all too well as real life. RIP to our innocence.

#PoemADay #30Poems30Days #AprPAD #WritersDigest, Today’s Theme: Reason

The national poetry month challenge is supposed to be for 30 straight days of writing poetry, however, in true fashion, I have fallen off and wittled my writing down to Wednesdays as my days get busy. So in an effort to at least stay on track, here’s this week’s contribution.  Today’s theme from the Writer’s Digest website is:  Reason

and the greatest of these

the reason I love
God told me I had no choice
love is the best commandment

#PoemADay #AprPAD #WritersDigest today’s theme: lucky number

7 times 7  (April 8,2019)

Not a round number
but meaningful
nonetheless
I was born in 73
7 plus 3 is 10
10 minus 3 is 7
what does that mean?
nothing at all
I made it up
but the outcome
is still 7
I worked at my last job
for 7 years
I was initiated
into my sorority
in 2007
and I was the 7th person
in line
again
means nothing
but in my head
it gives me motivation
hope
and solace
that there is something
beyond me
when God
for some reason
continues to
bestow
not luck
but grace
upon me
in the form of
the infinite
number 7

#PoemADay #WritersDigest #AprPAD Today’s Theme: Painter

If you are from my generation (not ashamed to admit it, the #40AndOver club, then you probably remember that guy who did the 7-up commercials, Geoffrey Holder, from the 1980s. But I bet that, like myself, most of you don’t know that he was also a jack of all trades in the art world.  This is my ode to him.

a play on words (the life of Geoffrey Holder) by Kellea Tibbs

He was born in 1930
and left this earth in 2014

We knew him as the 7-up man
not unlike many other commercial
slogans that are engrained
in our psyche
his voice was unforgettable

but he gave us so much more
a true artist
who dabbled in many forms
of expression

hailing from Trinidad
dancer,
choreographer,
singer,
director
and painter.

but it was with that voice
he offered us
as an artist
and in every instance of hearing it
his message was simple

some us have it
and some of us never will
