march thirty one: #30poems30days, April 5, 2013

reading vogue

some way
I became a fan of
Vogue Magazine

maybe it was the glossy pages that transported me
to the runways of Paris
or perhaps it’s the
all important
biblical like
September Issue
that women
claw and scratch
to get their hands on
this manual
we flock to
to keep abreast of
what we should
and shouldn’t
be wearing
next season

but really
i think
it’s that
as I get older
I realize that
these models are just people
and that, I too
can be just as beautiful
and just as trendy
even if I am
a normal woman’s size
and know that I will never starve myself
to be anything less

march thirty one: #30poems30days, April 4, 2013

there are many roads
named for a man
who walked in peace
fought for justice
and stood for non-violence

many of these streets, avenues, and boulevards
have become inescapable havens
where violence has become the norm
peace is an unspoken word
and where an innocent bystander losing her young life
has become a daily ritual

gun fanatics
would rather
cling to an outdated
right to bear arms
than to reshape gun laws
to benefit
the least of these
left to die
in their mother’s arms

somehow, Dr. King’s dream
has been deferred

April has now become one of my favorite months, not just because it’s finally spring, but because its also National Poetry Writing Month! Poets challenge themselves to write for 30 days straight! Let’s see what I come up with this year! Check out the NaPoWriMo website if you would like to join the challenge as well! (
